Ladbrokes Avoids Online Casino Taxes

The internet gambling partnership between France’s media group, Canal, and one of the UK’s gambling groups, Ladbrokes, sadly came to an end this week. This came out after the UK company, a services provider for online casinos, reached a decision not to go into the online casino gambling market in France. A spokesman for Ladbrokes disclosed the company’s choice to pull out of its collaboration with Canal. He went on to say that the main cause and the motivating factor behind Ladbrokes’ decision is the excessive taxes imposed by the newly regulated French market.
Gary McIlraith, the managing director for Ladbrokes’ digital channels, international and strategy, said that the decision was not made by a single person alone. Ladbrokes and its partners talked it out and ultimately came to a conclusion that France’s online casino gaming and gambling market is taxed at such high levels that it does not anymore represent a very attractive form of investment, no matter how lucrative online casinos are in the area. However, all hopes are not dashed since Ladbrokes’ revealed that they will still be monitoring the French gambling market for changes. But for now, the launch will not push through.
It appears that Ladbrokes is not the only online casino operator who has made the decision not to enter the French market. Paddy Power has also opted out against penetrating the market on a B2C basis, and Sportingbet has cancelled its B2B agreements with two newspapers, LExpress and Le Monde. On a lighter note, a piece of good news has landed on the French gambling market when Unibet has obtained licensing status with ARJEL, a French regulator, and is all set to start its operations either on the fourth quarter of 2010, or the early part of 2011.
